Yes. Massachusetts requires homeowners to obtain permits for installations of wood-burning, pellet-burning, gas-burning and propane (LP) appliances, even when replacing an existing appliance.
Solid-fuel appliances (wood and pellet-burning) require Building Permits; gas and propane appliances require gas permits, and both require a post-installation inspection to insure that the appliance has been installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications by a licensed, registered installer.
You will also need to update your Homeowner’s Insurance policy with information about your new hearth appliance, including supplying them with a copy of your permit.
